Leicestershire-Yorkshire: Tykes victory denied at Grace Road
County Championship Division Two, Grace Road
Leicestershire 320 & 157-7 drew with Yorkshire 486
Yorkshire 11pts, Leicestershire 8pts
Promotion-chasing Yorkshire were denied by the rain against battling Division Two bottom side Leicestershire.
Former England paceman Steve Harmison finished with 3-52, but the Tykes were held up by a combination of the weather and a determined rearguard action.
The home side began the final day at Grace Road on 57-2, 109 in arrears, but were aided by the loss of 60 overs.
After slumping to 78-5, Wayne White (44) and a dogged 126 in 105 balls from Ned Eckersley saw their side to 157-7.
The 11 points Yorkshire pocketed takes them into second place above Hampshire, while Leicestershire's haul of eight points lifts them off the bottom.
A heavy rain shower delayed the start by 75 minutes, before Yorkshire made up for lost time by taking three wickets in the 10 overs bowled before lunch.
Still needing another 88 runs to make Yorkshire bat again, the sixth-wicket stand of 67 in 24 overs between White and Eckersley added to the Tykes' frustrations, in between a heavy downpour, which caused a further 80-minute delay and the loss of 20 more overs in the afternoon.
The visitors finally removed White, wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow taking a sharp catch off Azeem Rafiq, but the celebrations were short-lived as more rain sent the teams off the field again with Leicestershire on 145-6, this time the hold-up lasting 70 minutes.
Play resumed with only 6.1 overs remaining and, although Eckersley was caught at short leg off Rafiq, Leicestershire held out.
