Worcestershire held on for a draw after Rory Hamilton-Brown and Tom Maynard scored centuries for Surrey.

Matt Pardoe and Richard Jones survived for 45 balls as Surrey came close to a remarkable win after following on.

Surrey earlier declared on 431-7 after beginning the day with a lead of only 44, as Maynard (143) and Hamilton-Brown (115) set the hosts 260 in 52 overs.

George Edwards then took 4-44 on his Championship debut as Worcestershire, who reached 150-8, were given a scare.

VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Worcestershire's director of cricket Steve Rhodes told BBC Hereford & Worcester:

"We made them follow on, so to not then get the victory was a blow.

"To then see Matt Pardoe playing as well as he did and stave off a defeat for us [was encouraging].

"It wasn't so much the runs he scored, it was more the manner in which he nursed us through a tough situation when Surrey were getting on top and bullying us.

"Maybe we were a little bit lucky in the end, so I have mixed feelings really."

Surrey coach Chris Adams told BBC London 94.9:

"It feels a bit like a loss, but it shouldn't because the boys showed immense character to come back from 40-8 yesterday.

"To get in a position today and nearly pull the win off was amazing.

"I think we showed our potential that we are a seriously dangerous side when we get our frame of mind right to play that sort of cricket."
