Vice-captain Joe Sayers targets strong Yorkshire start

Yorkshire vice-captain Joe Sayers is confident the side are capable of making a strong start in Division Two of the County Championship.

The Headingley side were relegated at the end of the last campaign after a turbulent season.

Sayers told BBC Radio Leeds: "Obviously our aim is promotion and it is very important to make a good start.

"There's a lot of determination here. We're looking to make amends and we're confident we can do so."

He added: "We've got a lot of cricket at Headingley at the beginning of the season so we'll be looking to make a mark."

The batsman also spoke of his delight at being made Yorkshire vice-captain, after a stint skippering the side in Andrew Gale's absence last season.

"I was really pleased to hear the news and I'm honoured to do the job," he continued.

"I enjoyed my spell as captain last year and got some great feedback from team-mates and management.

"It was good to finish a challenging year on a good note and give the Yorkshire members something to smile about."

Yorkshire begin their County Championship campaign at home to Kent on Thursday.
