Durham skipper Phil Mustard hits one of his 11 boundaries at Wantage Road

Durham skipper Phil Mustard led from the front as his side registered their first FL t20 win at the third attempt.

Northants started badly by slumping to 7-2 in the second over and needed a 63-run stand between Johan Botha and Andrew Hall to reach 124-9.

But that was never likely to be enough, with Mustard (61no) and Ian Blackwell (41no) easily chasing down the target.

Mustard finished it with a four as Durham reached their victory target with 23 balls to spare.

Earlier, England international Paul Collingwood, Chris Rushworth and Mitchell Claydon each took two wickets for Durham after Mustard won the toss and chose to put the home side in on a wicket that provided assistance for the seamers.

Having called correctly, Mustard then did his job with the bat too, with 10 fours and one six in his 49 balls, backed by Blackwell.

Mustard reached his ninth half-century in Twenty20 cricket before Chaminda Vaas gave him a lifeline by dropping a simple catch at fine leg.

Blackwell was also dropped, this time by Botha at mid-on off David Willey, on his way to smashing 41 off just 27 balls.

Durham had even given away six penalty runs earlier, due to their slow over-rate, but Northants stilll ended up well beaten.
