Stokes hit five sixes in one over against Hampshire on Sunday

Durham head coach Geoff Cook says England Under-19 batsman Ben Stokes has the 'X-Factor' after his display in the Championship draw with Hampshire.

The 19-year-old hit six sixes in a total of 135 and took six first-innings wickets for 68 runs in the county's opening four-day game of the campaign.

"He's got that bit of an X-Factor," Cook told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"He's immensely talented, he's got to learn every time he goes out but his power and his confidence are there."

Cook added: "I hope the game isn't just remembered for the five sixes in one over, his whole contribution was a lot more.

"He's still got improvements to make to his technique, he's got to work on trying to master the opposition in various conditions and we'll meet those conditions as time goes on.

"We're playing a disciplined seam attack at Headingley [against Yorkshire] in our next game, and that will be another opportunity for him to learn and extend his game."

Stokes, the son of former Whitehaven rugby league coach Ged Stokes, was called into the England Performance Squad last winter to tour Australia, after breaking into the Durham side during 2010.
