Cann, ranked 48th in the world, is hoping for a place at the Olympics

England number one Elizabeth Cann has crashed out of badminton's Scottish International, losing to 18-year-old university student Kirsty Gilmour.

Cann, last year's runner-up, went down to a 21-14 21-12 defeat in the second round in Glasgow.

It comes as a blow to her hopes of qualifying for London 2012.

Cann, who grew up in Jersey, is ranked 48th in the world whilst her challenger for the Great Britain spot Susan Egelstaff is 31st.

It is likely only one will be selected to represent the nation in next year's Olympics.

Meanwhile Gilmour's run in the Scottish International came to an end in the last 16 stage with a 21-16 14-21 21-16 loss to Denmark's Line Kjaersfeldt.

Elizabeth Cann is one of BBC Radio Jersey and BBC Channel Islands News' featured athletes as part of 'Olympic Dreams' in the build up to London 2012.
