    FOOTBALL

  6. 1749:
    FOOTBALL

Manager Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal can still win the Barclays Premier League despite not being able to match the outlay of some rivals. The Gunners are without a trophy in seven years and have been criticised by their supporters for not spending to try and compete with big-spending rivals such as Manchester City and Chelsea.

But Wenger told Time Out Hong Kong: "I must say that not being able to match the spending of the richest clubs does not mean that you can't compete with them on the pitch. We have always spent money because we are ambitious for top-class players and if you look at the history of our last 15 years, we have always had top-class players. It does not mean you can't win the title if you can't compete financially."

  7.

Benjamin Pearce on Twitter: "Carroll to Newcastle, Berba to Malaga, RVP to City, Tevez to stay, Dzeko to Milan. Foresee a lot of wasted money there though"

Devang Gandhi on Twitter: "RvP stays at Arsenal, Tevez to Milan, Berbatov to Juve, Carroll back to NUFC so Dempsey to LFC and Dzeko stays at City!"

Niklas Lanwehr on Twitter: "Carroll, Tevez and Dzeko to stay, RVP to Barcelona and Berbatov....no idea - Arsenal should try to persuade Lewandowski"

This is all very good, but where will Emile Heskey end up? Answers to #bbcsportsday.

  8. 1731:
    FOOTBALL

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes retiring Spurs skipper Ledley King was one of the best defenders in the world on his day.

"When he was at his best he was definitely one of the best centre halves in the world, no doubt about that," Redknapp told Sky Sports. "At the end of the season he was struggling, we were struggling at centre half, we had injuries, and maybe he played one or two games too many. It was difficult for him at the end and he wasn't the player we had at the start of the season even. It is only right he decided to retire now otherwise he would have ended up crippled and we don't want to see that."

  9. 1727:
    CRICKET

The day began terribly for England's cricketers as Andrew Strauss was out in the fourth ball of the innings, but it is looking pretty good now, especially for Strauss' fellow opener Alastair Cook. He has just reached his century to take England to 220-2 in the first innings of the first Test against South Africa at The Oval.

Cook now has 20 100s to his name for England, just two behind the record held by Wally Hammond, Colin Cowdrey and Geoffrey Boycott.

Kath Merry, who won bronze in the Sydney Olympics in 2000, was also asked in last night's London Calling on 5 live about the role of coaches with only eight days to go before the start of London 2012. "Every athlete is different, I think that's the key. I was crying the morning I left my coach, Linford Christie, before my final in Sydney because I was nervous and I didn't want to let anybody down. He said the right thing at the right time to put me in the right mindset so I went into that final in the right frame of mind. They do play a massive part and it depends what coach you're talking about because they have personal coaches and the team have individual coaches, not all personal coaches can travel to the Olympics because they are not all accredited."

Former Olympic swimming medallist Steve Parry was part of last night's London Calling programme on 5 live and was asked what role coaches would be playing for athletes with little more than a week until London 2012. "The coaches everywhere are going to kill for saying this but I think at this stage, when it comes to physical performance, are nearly redundant, that was the case in my sport because you're just resting up.

"But from a pyschological perspective, if you've got a coach that is highly strung, that is stressing you out, that you don't get on with, then from an athletes' perspective that's not good, and the shoe is going to be on the other foot for the coaches as well, they will be thinking exactly the same about the athlete, but they've done 10-15 years hard work to get to this position, now is just the tweaking phase."

"I haven't been back on my bike yet," she said. "It's the classic phrase, you've got to get back on your bike as soon as you can. I need to get back on my bike but the roads would cause my shoulder an awful lot of pain at the moment and I can't get into position with my arms properly.

"Even if I couldn't get my head around it for whatever reason I know I can train on a static trainer every day, two or three times a day if I have to, to get me there, and the closed roads are there for the Games so I wouldn't have to mix with cars. I fear a car coming up behind me at the moment but it's something I've got to get on with." You can listen to the programme again on the BBC iPlayer.

"There are always security guards around him so you can't really get close to Tiger the way you can sit down and talk to Phil Mickelson.
