The head of the Russian football federation resigns and apologises to fans after the national team was eliminated in the group stage of the European Championship. Keown added: "So he has cracked that side of it and I think there was a healthy respect between manager and players in the England camp, and he was glad of their performance really. He has had a short space of time to work with them but he is learning fast and the most important thing from all of this is that Hodgson will be the one that learns, not us, the pundits, watching. He has to learn fast and take the lessons from the Italy game - they gave us a footballing lesson but we only did it because we allowed them to."
-
1841:EURO 2012
Roy Hodgson's appointment may have come in for criticism from some areas but Martin Keown thinks he has been one of the big pluses from the tournament. "What is positive, and also glaringly obvious, is the great relationship he has with his players - there is real warmth, he said. "You can see that Hodgson almost loves the players, and you have got to have that. It can't be an 'us and them' situation which I often felt was the case under Fabio Capello, certainly from the outside looking in. Hodgson seems to have met the needs of the players much better, because they do look happier."

Keown added: If Roy Hodgson is going to set up his team to try to stop the opposition then, if they are playing three in midfield, we have got to be more adaptable. We were trying to get one of the front players, Wayne Rooney or Danny Welbeck, to pick up Andrea Pirlo but never in a million years are you going to get a forward to do that with any real purpose. They are not on the planet to defend, they are there to be creative."

1828:EURO 2012
Former England defender Martin Keown has been giving his view on England's defeat to Italy. Speaking to BBC Sport's Chris Bevan, he said: "We looked very organised, but we were a little bit rigid. I think last night showed that you need to, from a tactical point of view, be able to switch systems to try to shut out the opposition. We were trying to shut out Italy by playing a 4-4-2 formation, or 4-4-1-1 depending how you looked at it, and it really wasn't working."

Robbie Savage , BBC Radio 5 live ROBBIE SAVAGE Q&AShould Wayne Rooney be an automatic choice for England? He had a poor tournament and England were better without him… (@CheChe_Guevara)
Some people do talk nonsense! Rooney scored the winner in his first game. Everybody looked tired and off in the game against Italy. Rooney is world class. It's easy to criticise him, but looking at all the players they've got, he's the world-class player. It's nonsense to say he shouldn't be picked, absolute nonsense.

1451:
Robbie Savage , BBC Radio 5 live ROBBIE SAVAGE Q&ADid Hodgson tactically get it wrong against Italy, or did he make the most of the set of players selected? (@Gav2501)
I thought he was brave and bold. It was crying out for the pace of Walcott and Carroll, and that was a positive substitution. I was surprised he brought Henderson on when OC did so well in the first game. He gave it his best shot, and tactically what else could he have done? They shut up shop and were looking to hit Italy on the break, but Walcott didn't get the ball to his feet. That's the most disappointing thing.
I thought he made positive changes at the tight times but they didn't pay off. Tactically, the 4-4-2 with the pace out wide would have been fine with Rooney dropping back as long as Walcott could have got the ball and got balls into the box for Carroll. I thought Welbeck did well and the only player lucky to keep his place was Ashley Young. He had a poor tournament, summed up by his penalty.
-
1445:EURO 2012
England manager Roy Hodgson has been speaking to the media, saying: "I think we've done well top come through the tournament without losing a match in normal time. Robbie Savage , BBC Radio 5 live ROBBIE SAVAGE Q&AQ: Is the English domestic season too long for players that are about to take part in international competitions? (@Haribo101)
A: Listen, you get plenty of rest and are well looked after as a footballer. Let's not start making excuses when we've just been beaten by a better team. They were knackered because they had less possession than anybody else, which meant they were chasing the ball all the time. That's the only reason they were so tired.

Despite the threat from Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, Spain will not alter their approach when they meet them in Wednesday's semi-final. 1423:EURO 2012
BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty: "The relationship between England's camp and the media has been very good at Euro 2012. Think there was a genuine acceptance of the honesty of this group of players. Hodgson and his players also gave the English media extra interview access away from the set-piece press conferences. Journalists also greatly appreciated the heartfelt and genuine tributes paid to our colleague Danny Fullbrook, the Daily Star's chief football writer, after his sad death during the tournament. They've got good spirit. I thought Steven Gerrard was immense and Joleon Lescott played really well. Overall, I think they did well.

ROBBIE SAVAGE Q&AQ: Should Ireland get rid of Trap? (@pk_dxb)
A: No. He did exceptionally well to get them there. Lots of their players play Championship football. At the end of the day the players weren't good enough at a major tournament. Simple. Team spirit and work ethic will only get you so far.
Quality counts and they weren't good enough. He can only work with the players that he's got and he did great to get Ireland there. He has players who are nearing the end of their careers and he'll have to rebuild now. They should stick with him.

-
1345:
ROBBIE SAVAGE Q&AQ: Do you think England will win a major tournament in your lifetime? (@Crippy4Villa)
A: No, not unless something fundamentally changes from grassroots level. They can't keep the ball and always have less possession. A major overhaul is needed, and futsal - keeping the ball below head height - with teams of youngsters who are able to pass it, is the way or you've no chance. Possession is key.
Why did England struggle? Because they were chasing the ball so much and had so little possession. They looked shattered against Italy. Pirlo, 33, dictated the game and he's played every game. Gerrard and Parker were chasing the ball all tournament and look shattered. Gerrard was cramping. Keeping the ball is such a must at international level.

-
1331:
ROBBIE SAVAGE Q&AQ: Are Spain still a stronger side than Germany? (@RMANDER93)
A: I think this will be the final. This tournament has been a good tournament without there being an outstanding team. Against Greece, Germany were sometimes sloppy in giving the ball away cheaply, but Spain and Germany are the only two teams who have gone for it in every game in terms of possession.
They're the two best teams, but both sides have their flaws and weaknesses. It would be a worthy final, and I think the Germans will win it. They're big, strong and powerful. They've got players on top of their form in Ozil, Gomez, Schweinsteiger, and have a recognised striker who's banging in the goals.

1315:
ROBBIE SAVAGE Q&AQ: Are too many non-English players in the Premier League hindering selection? (@giropixie)
A: The influence of foreign players certainly help their respective club teams. Look at the likes of the top teams when Ronaldo played for Manchester United or Drogba at Chelsea. John Terry had Ricardo Carvalho beside him for a while and it enhanced his game, I believe.
But the influx does hinder the national team. The majority of foreign players are the skilful, more technical players, and the English players usually do the hard graft. England players develop in the Premier League but when people come together as the England team it hinders them, obviously.

Roy Hodgson: "Our league contains many teams that don't have one English player. So you can't compare leagues with nations. . I'll be going to watch matches when they'll be two very good Premier League teams playing but maybe only two English players.

"Last night, we had quite a few players suffering during that extra 30 minutes. To get through that and lose the penalty shoot-out is difficUlt. Our record in penalty shoot-outs is a poor one."

Roy Hodgson: "I think it's important you have experienced players. I've been delighted with Steven and John, two of the players who have been through all this heartbreak before.
