An
all day pass on the Sheffield tram system is only £2.20 and while
for some this may seem to represent the cheapest way home, I took
an afternoon on the service to find that much more lies beyond the
automatic doors of the Supertram.
There
are three services that operate in and around Sheffield (Blue, Yellow
and Purple) and the Dayrider allows unlimited access to each of
these.
For
those amongst us who enjoy shopping as an activity in itself (boyfriends
and husbands look away now) the tram service is a portal to a planet
where the cash register is always ringing and the shelves are always
full.
 |
| The
tram can take you to Sheffield's shopping centres... |
A tram
can be caught to Meadowhall (the South Yorkshire retail Mecca which
attracts credit cards more readily than David Beckham attracts the
Far-Eastern public) and Crystal Peaks (a smaller shopping centre
but with added estate, agents, library and bookies).
Or
you can get off at either West Street or Castle Square (city centre)
for a more conventional high street experience.
Anybody
with a thirst for shopping will be well served by the Supertram.
Also
on the city centre service is the Cathedral, one of the architectural
and spiritual hearts of the city. For those who are unfamiliar with
this historic building, a visit is essential and for those who know
it well there are regular musical recitals being hosted here throughout
the summer months.
With
both the Crucible
and the Lyceum
theatres within easy reach of the Castle Square stop there is also
much to be enjoyed for those of artistic or dramatic persuasion
- whether you want to quench a passing interest or get a taxi service
to the day's hottest show, the tram can provide it.
 |
| ...or
to Kelham Island Museum! |
Other
high minded individuals may also enjoy the Kelham
Island museum which is only a short walk from the Shalesmoor
stop.
The
jewel in the crown, however, is the unmatched entertainment complex
Valley Centertainment. This site offers all the thrills and spills
of your average holiday and none of the fuss.
A
cinema, a bowling alley and a dazzling array of eateries and watering
holes can all be reached within minutes of alighting the tram.
You
can also get a direct service to Hillsborough Football Stadium,
Sheffield University and the Ponds Forge complex.
