Whether you're a born 'n bred Barnsley resident or an expat in Bermuda with a fondness for flat caps, you'll know that Yorkshire has a special something.

But it's not easy to define, and certainly not as simple as where you were born or where you live.

Take Dickie Bird, he's 110% Yorkshire. Everyone knows it, but they're not quite sure why.

But think of Doncaster-born Diana Rigg and what springs to mind? Emma Peel's catsuits and a Tony-winning Medea, but not her Northern roots.

Take our quiz to see how Yorkshire you are and then tell us what you think makes a person Yorkshire, now that flat caps and dark satanic mills have gone out of fashion...

Hope to visit this year with my wife and if we can find them visit the graves of my Hancox ancestors who worked as forgemen in the Osborne Steel Mill. And my Harrop family. Liz - Suffolk
Cut me in half and I'm branded with my routes. Born in Gods Own County. Born in Barnsley - 44 sunny Market Hill years ago. Bring back Barnsley market ... An amazing place to come from .. just the name stops conversations - rather like saying you come from Belfast ... or some other war torn land. It is so so boring. Barnsley folks work so hard, have pride and an honesty I just dont ever see anywhere I work in the UK. Be proud, but do ask for those much needed changes back to how special Barnsley was and should be. And stop voting Labour .. what did they do for you really - the mines are shut - they did that - wake up!

Janet, Whitby

To Mike Pearson re motto YORKSHIREMAN’S MOTTO When I was a reet young lad. Mi father said to me, “It seems to me tha’t growin’ up Na what does tha mean to be? It all depends upon thissen, It’s only up to thee. So I’ll not say much t’ thee again, But take one tip from me – ‘Ear all, see all, say nowt, Eat all, sup all, pay nowt, ‘N’ if tha ivver does owt fer nowt, Tha does it fer thissen!”

Joan Lockwood in Dinmore, Qld Australia
Born n bred in Mirfield W.Yorks, Dad a spinner, Mum a weaver at local mills. School at Heckmondwike. Married a Batley lad. Love the Dales, the food and the language. Miss all that here in Oz, but got great marks in a Qld University course by doing a presentation on the "Yorkshire-Norman' linguistic connection. Love our dialect - enjoyed Austin Mitchell's 1988 book "Teach Thissen Tyke" I'm knocking on a bit - lost my job and went to university to keep myself out of mischief!!! Got a BA in German (which also shares a lot of words with our dialect) and French last year, and now doing an honours year, to qualify to do a PhD where I'll do some language research, certainly involving "Yorksher" Miss the place, miss the beer and the pubs and everything.

100% Yorkshire born in Sheffield left at age 34. in 1972. Still have my accent which is cute here. I have a bottle of Hendersons in my fridge, thats worth more than gold. I have written a book it's called 'Its Muck or Nettles' about my Grandmother and her six young sons who were furniture removers from 1913--I love Whitby and the moors. I miss the Sheffield wry humour and the verbal parries and whippets and the old rag market. My favourite film of all time is "Brassed off"

Sheffield Lass - Georgia, USA
I was born and raised in Sheffield and if that doesn't make me "A Yorkshire Gal through and through" then I don't know what will!! Left home 40 years ago this month but have been home for visits several times over the years. All my ever growing family including my "almost" 90 yr. old Dad still live there. Even though I know speak with an American accent, I can still lay on the "Yorkshire" when I need to. I miss the pub crawls, fish and chips (however greasy they may be), the city lights at Christmas, pantomimes (they don't have them here) and all Sheffielders magnificent ability to have 3 conversations with 6 different people at the same time and understand everything being said! That's class!!

A note to "Liz, Leeds". I don't understand. You say to be Yorkshire you have to be Yorkshire born and bred. Yet you say you're a Geordie, yet you were born in Hull. EH??

Mikie Pearson, Sheffield born moved to Leeds Uni a
Does anyone know the words to "A Yorkshireman's Advice to his Son" most people know "see all , hear all , say nowt" "eat all, sup all, pay nowt" My Father recited the full verse when I purchased my first tape recorder but unfortunately the recorder no longer works and I cannot find the tape, and Dad's almost 92 and can remember less than me, can anyone help? It starts: My old father used to say to me here's a bit of good advice I'm bound to gi' to thee tha't so simple, tha't so very dense thee he-ad's full o' summat but it aint common sense t'only time tha looks intelligant at all is when tha't spredin' treacle on thi bread an' if owt ails me, it'll be god help thee if tha don't keep this motto in thee head. next probably come the bits " eat all, sup all etc"

aiesha rotherham
