FACTS

In 2001, 51 people were killed and 715 seriously injured in accidents on South Yorkshire roads. Research by the South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership suggests speeding was a significant factor in a number of cases.

National research has shown that two thirds of drivers exceed the 30mph limit in urban areas.

Sheffield Hillsborough MP Helen Jackson says she is convinced more cameras will help reduce the number of serious crashes.

The South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership plans to install more than 20 permanent camera sites and 15 new cameras across the region.

This is possible because the revenue from speeding fines can now be invested in speed reduction measures rather than going to the Treasury.

Jackson, a member of the Commons Transport Select Commitee, says she is fully in favour of the plan despite being fined herself for driving over the speed limit.

"The weight of evidence shows a direct link between an intensive programme of speed cameras and enforcement and a reduction in deaths and casualties," she said.

"It’s quite stark. Cameras must be justified," she said.

"I think the cameras need to be seen. The important thing is that people take them seriously - that people know they will get caught if they speed."
