When people think of Sheffield, the first things that usually spring to mind are Pulp, The Human League and ABC, Def Leppard and Moloko.

Under the shiny surface lies Sheffield's thriving music scene

And depending on where your tastes lie, the second when it comes to Sunny Sheff is its reputation as a nationwide dance club haven where various DJs make trance compilations and partygoers roam the streets in fluffy boots.

Plus, if you recall, there’s also the fact that Sheffield has one of the biggest live arena venues in England.

But this glamorous veneer covers a vibrant, pulsating heart - what is termed loosely as the 'Sheffield Music Scene’.

In my opinion, it's the production of local talent, recording venues both private and council funded, a vast influx of rehearsal rooms and more importantly the vast amount of live venues that Sheffield has to offer that fuels enough intrigue and word of mouth to make people, students and commuters alike, want to come and experience the city.

The Boardwalk and the Leadmill: Integral to music in Sheffield

From the 1960s onwards, Sheffield has had a fine reputation for live venues such as the Mojo Club, the Boardwalk and the legendary Leadmill.

The opening of Barfly Sheffield in 2001, Bandweiser live music promotions nights at The Casbah and the fact that both universities play host to a number of signed and unsigned artists throughout the year has upgraded the city’s live capacity.

As for the chance to record music, Red Tape Studios, The Workstation and the Darnall Music Factory all offer opportunities for budding artists to find their niche in either the field of recording or production.

And if you are a budding DJ instead of a spectator or singer, then there’s currently a massive ongoing influx of community radio stations that are urging fresh talent to show their turntable and MC skills on their decks.

Any further information for any of these is available through the links on the website. There’s always, without doubt, something to cater for absolutely everyone!
