Pulp are headlining Auto, a huge rock and electronica one-night festival at Magna on 14 December 2002.

The event is the brainchild of Pulp's Steve Mackey, and is bringing together new and established acts to create an evening like you've never seen before.

We met up with Steve and frontman Jarvis, and asked them about the inspiration behind the event, why they chose South Yorkshire, and what the members of Pulp have been up to recently.

We heard about Candida and chipmunks, Jarvis's first Pulp gig, and how they picked the 30 acts that are playing on the night.

Click the links below to hear the whole chat in handy fun-sized pieces:

  The Band
audio Jarvis: "Last time I heard, she [Candida Doyle - Pulp's keyboard player] was in some kind of hut in Maine surrounded by chipmunks."
audio Steve: "Until about three months ago, we've been seeing quite a lot of each other." Jarvis: "Yeah, too much!"

  The event
audio Jarvis: "It's going to be like Gatecrasher on payday!"

  The music
audio Jarvis: "I expected a lot of the older ones [Pulp songs] to sound dated, but they sounded ok."
audio Steve: "There's a couple of artists that I've never seen live, so I'm quite excited."
audio Steve: "I quite like artists that are slightly dysfunctional, slightly difficult to categorise, slightly unpredictable."

  The visuals
audio Jarvis: "To be honest with you, I haven't done them yet. But they're going to be great. Lots of pictures of me."

  The place
audio Steve: "We'd been putting concerts on in unusual places - we did one in Pentonville Prison, and one in the Fringe sex club..."
audio Steve: "If you go to Wembley Arena you don't get much atmosphere..."
audio Jarvis: "The fire tornado - I quite liked that. Took my eyebrows off, it did..."

  The ethos
audio Steve: "I don't want to forget that it's going to be a night of rock and roll music."
audio Steve: "The music scene has got very corporate and a bit dull."
audio Steve: "The guy from Blur has just left 'cause he doesn't want to be part of that big machine."
