Did
you know..?
- In
theory, you only need a conventional car driving license
to drive Supertram.
Don't worry, though - its operators
insist on a full training course for all drivers!
- Supertram
is one of the largest articulated vehicles ever built for
public use.
It's nearly 35 metres in length, 2.65
metres wide and weighs 52 tonnes.

- Sheffield's
terrain posed special problems for the Supertram's designers.
The vehicle has to cope with one-in-10
gradients, tight 25 metre curves and "humps" of
200 metre radius.
- Supertram
"talks" to trackside signals while it's on the
move.
And the trackside signals talk to
traffic lights - making sure Supertram has priority when
it crosses roads.
- Supertram
made its official debut on 21 March 1994.
Trams had previously been phased out from Sheffield's streets
in 1960. Check out a pictorial record of their earlier incarnation
on David
Bradley's tram website (not a BBC site).
