She received a rapturous welcome from the hordes of enthusiastic onlookers who had gathered to catch a glimpse of the monarch.

And everyone agreed the experience had been worth standing around on a gloomy Sheffield day for.

"I'm very excited about the visit," said Wei Yuan, from China, who is in Sheffield until July with her friend Jun Feng Xian.

"The Queen is very well known in China and we are very lucky to see her as we are only in Sheffield for four months."

Pam McClean, from Sandygate, Sheffield, revealed she had met Her Majesty in person.

"I met the Queen some years ago in London when she was unveiling a portrait in Church House, Westminster," she said.

"She has a real presence when she walks into a room - her smile is unforgettable."

For Fred Thorpe and Margaret Spark - over from Canada to visit their sister Brenda Haigh from Bradfield, Derbyshire - the chance to see The Queen was the perfect way to end their holiday.

"It's marvellous," said Ms Spark.

"I saw The Queen when she visited British Columbia in Canada last year and I'm a big fan of the royals.

"To see her again in Sheffield is the perfect way to end our vacation."
