It finished a year ago and the government has been looking at the evidence ever since before finally reaching its decision.

Peel Holdings want to operate flights to major European destinations.

The runway at Finningley is also long enough to cater for flights further afield to the US or Caribbean.

Facts and figures
The airport will cost £80m to build.

Manchester Airport
Finningley will be similar in size to Manchester airport

It could be operational as soon as 2004.

It's hoped the airport will create 7,000 jobs.

Finningley will aim to handle 2m passengers each year by 2014.

This would make it around the same size as East Midlands airport, Leeds Bradford and Liverpool John Lennon.

Manchester airport by comparison carries 18 million passengers a year. Heathrow has 65 million a year.
