The
Bulls mother was in town, and we needed somewhere respectable
to take her.
Sheiks
is one of very few Lebanese restaurants in South Yorkshire, which
is a shame. I love Lebanese food. But maybe theyve scared
off the competition. Its great to find a restaurant that makes
a bit of an effort with the inside. Ok, so its only some fabric
stapled to the ceiling, but the tent-like interior does feel fun.
We
decided to do the traditional thing, and order lots of mezzas (starters)
to share instead of having two courses each. This was a good decision.
We chose four each - this was a bit much. Three would have been
ample.
The
food was great. Lots of fresh flavours, and the moutabal (aubergine
dip) was some of the best Ive ever tasted. The salads were
filled with fresh herbs, the chicken livers were meltingly gorgeous.
Yum.
It
sounds cliched to speak of friendly service, but both our waitress
and the chap at front of house were really lovely. They encouraged
us to have what we liked, advised us when we needed it, and made
us feel truly comfortable and at ease. We were told to linger as
long as we liked (wed ordered too much food - the best sort
of mistake).
We
tried some Moroccan wine, which was a little rough but perfectly
drinkable (especially after the first bottle
)
Sheiks
wasnt cheap. But we did order too much food, and we also drank
quite a bit of non-house wine. When the Bull and I return, well
be able to stuff ourselves on delicious Middle Eastern titbits and
quaff copious quantities of wine without fearing the arrival of
the bill. Groovy.

Sheiks is an excellent restaurant. Such a wide variety of dishes, I intend to revisit and try them all! The atmosphere is really relaxed, and the staff friendly. Definitely 5 moos for this one, highly recommended.

Went here on Sat night after reading the reviews on this page. Was really disappointed. The service was poor and the food was tasteless....certainly not worthy of the price tag. Will not be going again. Give it 1 moo - and I think that's being generous!

I adore this place! I frequently go mon-thur before 7 and you get a starter and a main for £6.95. This even includes the excellent braised lamb skanks. I recommended this to a friend and her Turkish husband recently. They went and thoroughly enjoyed it too. Also, the wine is excellent, particularly the Lebanese Hochar.

Early evening offer Mon to Thurs before 7 is great value. I nearly went for the meze special with four mezes per person but opted for the special. My wife had chicken wings to start and I had the deep fried white cheese. Both were delicious with mild spicy flavours. My wife dislikes heavily spiced food so she really enjoyed her meal where the spices add to instead of taking over the flavours. For the main courses we had chicken in lemon and I had lamb with a skewer of peppers and shallots. Drinks - well we went for mango juice and guafa juice both refreshing. Would definitely recommend it.Parents with young children, students and larger groups created a good atmosphere with great music as well. 27/05/05
la campasina
The meal at Sheiks wasn't great. The mezze starter got a 3 moo in our estimatiotion but the rest of the meal was down hill from there. I had the veggie kebabs which were really bad, my brother had some lamb which he said was over cooked. The house wine was just about drinkable. Overall, this little campasina wasn't too impressed. 2 Moos
As for the restaurant well, the view of West Street was a bit of a shocker for a little country girl!! Don't think I'll go again.

Having been to the Middle East several times, it is good to find the same cuisine in Sheffield. Have eaten here on several occasions - good; Mezze is particularly enjoyable; for the reviewer who found the Moroccan wine a touch on the rough side, try the red from the Bekkaa Valley next time which is considerably superior.

Could this be the best meal ever!!! The food is absolutely gorgeous! Start with the special mezza and order any 4 starters to tempt your taste buds and follow with a good sized, very tasty main. The garlic dip is to die for! Service is good and friendly and the place has a nice atmosphere too. Definately on the go back list!

3.5 moos. I ate there last night, and this review is byproduct of me searching for their veggie meze menu to use at home. Not great value, but veggies have a hard choice for late evenings. I like this place. The moutabal (aubergine dip) is the star, and will be the most difficult to reproduce. Would have liked a chance to try Lebanese wine by the glass.

Five moos from me. Excellent little spot this, and as for those chicken livers... mmmm!
The weekday tea time special makes this good value too.

I have to agree that this place is pretty overated. Having eaten in a lot of Lebanese Restraunts (and indeed, eaten in Lebanon itself), this place is certainly nothing special. Whilst not offensive, it is a bit of a rip off - £4.50 or so for a Haloumi starter, that has possibly the meanest helping of Haloumi in the whole world! At least the food is fairly authentic, unlike that terrible place masquerading as a Greek restraunt, which isn't so far away. 2 and a half moos - reasonable food, but not value for money.

How many moos can you give - if it's 5 out of 5 then I have to agree
We eat at Sheiks regularly (particularly for their early evening deal which is cheaper than going home and getting a take-away and SOOOOO much tastier!)
Falafel to die for, light and crispy bourak, heavenly cauliflower baked in a lemon sauce for starters and for main course the kebabs with the lovely rice with wiggly bits of noodles in takes some beating. I have eaten there at least 20 times over the last year or so and can honestly say the food has never been anything but first rate, the staff friendly and helpful and the atmosphere welcoming.
If you haven't tried Lebanese before and are unsure - try them Monday to Thursday before 7pm - two courses for 6.95 - you can't go wrong
Linda
Sheik's deserves the 5 moos it got. If you were disappointed, I suggest you try the Chicken Lebanese with Chips or the Sish Tawook with chips. Awesome. Their garlic sauce is one of the best that I have tasted.

I'm afraid that I cannot agree with the five moos grading given to this restaurant. Sheffield suffers from a lack of variety of restaurants - there are only two Thai, one Greek and as far as I know this is the only Lebanese one. Go to a good Lebanese restaurant in London and then go back to Sheiks and you will see what I mean - yet again Sheffield residents are fobbed off with sub-standard food because unfortunately many of them don't know any better.

I'd have to agree that this is a fine choice for a night out. Sheik's was recommended to my partner and I by a friend as a good place to eat and a restaurant with a vegetarian menu that went beyond the norm. Both my dauntless vegetarian other-half and myself enjoyed the meal, but it was a biy off-putting when a member of staff started playing patience at the table across from us...that really killed the intimate mood of the evening until we left the restaurant. Great place, pity about the way the staff amuse themselves when bored.

I have to write to completely disagree with your five stars for this labanese restraunt I went here with 4 of my pals a few months ago and had never had such an awfull meal. I am most definately not a vegitarian and maybe it was the lack of meat on the menu that left us all leaving and going to the chip shop on the way home as we where all simply hungry.

5 moos!
We always do the same as Greedy cow did here - order a table full
of mezes and share. As veggies, the choice is excellent, the service
is friendly and prompt and the food - well, it's excellent. The
arabic salad is my fave - tomatoes, parsley and cucumber in a lemony
dressing. Burak (little filo pastry cigars stuffed with cheese)
and hummous go together great. If you like to just 'get stuck in',
this is ideal.
Drinks
- Bottled beer, not sure what type. Possibly Becks. Varied clientele
- couples, families, students. Quite subdued early in the evening
- not sure about later on. (We usually eat here before hitting the
town!)
I have
recommended this place to friends and taken relatives there and
everyone really enjoyed it. Meat eaters assured me the meaty food
was really good too! It makes a lovely (and I think, lighter)change
to the usual restaurants in Sheffield.
There
is a set menu item - Mezes for 2, mezes for 4 - it's reasonably
cheap but not sure exactly how much. I think our bill is normally
less than £25 for two adults.
