A proper
pub with real ales and proper pub food, the Rutland isn't glamorous,
nor is it fashionable.
There's
a certain timelessness about the place which makes it the perfect
pub in which to hang out while time slips by.
The
beer garden's lovely, and crammed with so many flowers in the summer
that you could easily mistake it for somewhere more exotic than
a dusty corner of central Sheffield.
The
ale is kept well - particular favourites are Black Sheep and Adnams,
and real ale guides adorn the bar.
Pork
scratchings and rizlas are on offer - the Rutland know their clientele,
and they provide for them generously.
The
food can be patchy, but falls mainly into the "good pub grub"
category. An accomplice of mine found the salmon and broccoli lasagne
unconvincing, but the leek and chestnut bake is true comfort food,
and remarkably delicious, and the steakwich has a large number of
adoring fans throughout the Cultural Industries Quarter.

NO NO NO!!! your wrong!
The person who produces these articles either doesn’t come from Sheffield and writes them on the train back home after spending 10 mins in the place or just hasn’t got a clue what the pubs he is writing reviews on are all about. I’m sorry but to go and give the Rutland arms 4 out of 5 and then trot down to the Kelhem island tavern and give it a 2 is just laughable. To say the beer is kept well obviously means that you had a cold at the time and couldn’t taste a dam thing. The only thing that really saves that pub is the fact the food is excellent with a wide range of foods varying from a chip buttes to the stated chestnut, leak and mushroom bake. And for god sake there is no timelessness about the place it is just a shabby run down shadow of its former self when the previous landlord had it and yes about 4 years ago you could say that the garden was exotic and full of flowers but now if you care to renew you site you would find that the garden has gone the way of the pub and has just grown tired from neglect! Have you noticed at all that the Sheffield in bloom prizes have stopped going to that particular garden and suddenly migrated over to the Kelhem island (isn’t that strange as that is the exact place the previous landlord of the Rutland arms now lives and owns a pub? Infact he DOSE own the Kelhem island spooky hmmmm???) Which turns me nicely to the Kelhem its self, down what can be called a bit of a run down area of Sheffield but a place that is on the up with quite pricy flats scattered around and its reputation of being a red light district driven out. Sure it’s a small little pub but with its now little conservatory it makes better use of its space. The whole point about this pub and the most glairing error of you writer is that this pub doesn’t actually try to be anything all it try’s to do is serve good local beer at an excellent price with a constant change around to keep the dye hard fans of real ail happy. If you don’t like the decor then fine but you cant say the Rutland is timeless and then say that you’re not a fan of the Kelhem. I’m afraid Mat, I agree with Dave who has posted a comment the review needs to go in fact that goes for most of the reviews of Sheffield pubs need to go they are out dated and simply wrong due to poor presentation of the article and an intense lack of knowledge of what he is talking about.
I feel I have ranted on enough for know so I am going to leave it at that.

The best thing about this pub is the beer garden, but the food's pretty good too. Basically cooked and served in the way you'd expect if your mum worked in the kitchen (make your own "your mam" jokes please).

The atmosphere in this pub is great.Very relaxed & somewhat bohemian. My great grandad owned this pub in the 1950's & my Dad & I are a little sentimental about it.But that said it is what it is. A proper Sheffield pub with no pretensions, the steakwich sarnis are fab. Only criticism is the seating, which could do with replacing as its rather shabby.

The Rutland is a little gem. Great pub grub, fantastic beer and a wonderful garden make it a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle.

I don't know about the food but the pub is good. I like the weird decor - Egyptian 'artefacts'! There are usually a couple of good beers on offer, e.g Tim Taylors Landord and Black Sheep. All in all a good place to meet up before moving on or staying around until closing time!

Bacon and black pudding sandwiches. Fantastic
