Abbeydale
Moonshine
The
description:
A single varietal beer based on the ubiquitous Maris Otter Pale
Ale malt grist with a hint of malted wheat.
 |
|
Abbeydale
Moonshine
|
The
addition of Washington Willammett hops and a lot of tender loving
care proved to be all that was necessary to produce a popular prize-winner.
5.4% abv.
The
verdict:
Yummy. The panel liked this very much.
"Quaffable",
said the Bull - it was his favourite in the testing.
"Flowery
and light," said Greedy Cow.
"Pleasant
- but a bit of a girls' beer - ouch! - in a good way," said
BLF, as the Bull kicked him...
Barnsley
Bitter
The
description:
A pale brown beer, well balanced, with a dry and bitter finish.
3.8% abv.
The
verdict:
A no-nonsense bitter with a nice sticky edge.
We
thought this one would go really well with a pub lunch.

Kelham
Island's Easy Rider
|
The
description:
Easy Rider is brewed with a blend of floor
malted Maris Otter barley and spring wheat to provide a clean fruity
palate.
Willamette hops from America's Yakima Valley are used to provide
both bitterness and a pleasant floral bouquet. 4.3% abv.
The
verdict:
"Ooh, this is a bit wacky," said the Bull and BLF.
Greedy
thought it was fruity, with just a slight toasty aftertaste.
They
all thought it was pleasantly light with a hint of sweetness.
Pale

|
Kelham
Island's Pale Rider
|
The
description: Brewed from a combination of British
and continental malts and a mixture of hops Pale Rider has a honeyed
flavour, a powerful aroma and a dangerously deceptive drinkability.
5.2% abv.
The
verdict:
This was Greedy's favourite.
"Mmm,
hoppy, flowery, I like!" she said. "It's refreshing and
summery." She
thought it was a bit drier than the others.
The
Bull and BLF didn't get much of a look in...

Wentworth
Oatmeal Stout
|
The
description:
Dark, smooth, deeply delicious, and definitely moreish.
Heaped with bucketfuls of roast and chocolate malts, this award-winning
stout has to be tasted to be fully understood. 4.8% abv.
The
verdict:
A dark, chocolately, toasty beer. It was a bit spikey, which surprised
us - we were expecting something smoother.
"It's
one for a dark, wet, Sheffield night alongside your bangers and
mash," said BLF. That'll be most of the time, then...

Wentworth
Rampant Gryphon
|
The
description:
A beast of a beer. Well-balanced and golden in colour but deceptively
strong.
This
award winning strong pale ale displays hints of fruit and sweetness
while retaining a hoppy character. 6.2% abv.
The
verdict:
A sweet and slightly thicker beer, this one.
"Mmm,
honeyed tones," said Greedy, though it was a bit strong for
her.
"I
think it tastes of cheese," said the Bull. "Grr,
tiger!" said BLF. Erm, ok.

The
description:
Our famous award-winning pale ale, affectionately known as 'Woppa'!
A
light golden colour with wonderful bursts of citrus fruits and an
unforgettable hoppiness at the finish. 4% abv.
The
verdict:
The panel agreed this was a pleasant light ale, with a good taste
of fruit, then hops. Sharp
and sweet with a nice toasty aftertaste.
BLF
declared this his pint; Greedy and the Bull backed off...

The
Final Verdict
Our
favourites:
Abbeydale Moonshine, Kelham Island Pale Rider and Wentworth WPA.
All
the bottled beers are available from the breweries or good off licences.
The draft beers are available in pubs across South Yorkshire.

Greedy
Cow would like to thank Linda Hutton of Sheffield CAMRA and the
chaps at the Archer Road Beer Stop for their advice.
Greedy
Cow, as ever, paid for the beer.
