The division is shaping up to be very tight, with very few points
separating teams in play-off positions from those seemingly in a
relegation battle.
I think
we will see plenty of surprising results this season - it's going
to be a case of holding your nerve.
Any
team that can put a good run together can become a contender for
promotion, which has to be good for us fans.
To
be fair we didn't really deserve anything out of the Port Vale match,
even if Fallon's early goal gave us all hope.
They
managed to maintain their 100% home record fairly comfortably in
the end - it was just one of those days.
We
were all hoping to bounce back on Tuesday against Oldham, a team
that have had their fair share of off-the-field problems.
However,
the adversity doesn't seem to be affecting their spirit, and I wasn't
the only one to think that they had the better of the first half.
Lumsdon
scored, Wednesday were drawing and Vale were behind - at that point
it looked like we were heading back to the top of the table.
We
were playing some encouraging football, and I was confident that
the defence wouldn't let us down. Of course it did, and Oldham quickly
equalised.
Even
then we had a great chance to win it with a last minute penalty,
but it wasn't to be our day - Gorre hit the bar, and we are now
down to fifth in the league.
Still,
we have got off to a good start, the off-the-field problems seem
to be getting resolved, and the rumour mill about new players is
picking up.
If
the Dion Dublin one is true I'll be delighted. He's just what is
needed at this level, and should be able to add the goals we desperately
need.
So,
Swindon at home on Saturday. They are flying, playing some good
football and may start the game as favourites.
This
should suit us, as they are set up to come at us - giving us the
opportunity to break. They also play football, which always seems
to bring out the best in our lads so it's a game I'm looking forward
to.
It'll
also give us a chance to see young James Milner from Leeds who is
with Swindon on loan until the end of the month - so that should
be interesting.
I'm
going to go for a 2-1 win, and I expect Gorre to make up for his
disappointment on Tuesday with one of the goals.
To
sum up the season so far:
1.
We are fifth, after narrowly avoiding relegation last year.
2. We have the new owners that most of the fans wanted.
3. We will be out of administration shortly.
4. We have a great manager.
5. We have brought in some good players.
6. We are still above Sheffield Wednesday.
It's
early days still, but we have plenty to be proud of, plenty to be
happy about and we have a season that we can look forward to.
Our
crowd on Tuesday was our biggest of the season so far. So come on
everyone, lets get behind the lads and show 'em exactly what all
this means to us.
COME
ON YOU REDS!
