It looks like our future has been secured, and with the council
involvement our assets seem to have been protected.
A
great result, but it took a long time coming.
This
column is supposed to be about what it's like being a Barnsley fan,
but I can't help but spare a thought at the moment for fans of teams
like Notts County (who may have also now been saved) and Oldham,
whose future is by no means certain.
Both
teams are rivals of ours - being in the same division, but I'm sure
I speak for most football fans when I say that I would be sorry
to see any other team go to the wall.
It
just doesn't seem right for all the people that have poured their
hearts and souls into their clubs to see the gates locked and no
more games for their team.
I remember
how I felt when it almost happened to us.
We
are still officially in administration, but the word is that it
will just be a matter of time before that is sorted.
In
the meantime, our unbeaten record continues, and we are back on
TOP OF THE LEAGUE!
We
didn't play well against Chesterfield, we didn't really have to.
They looked a poor side and on the day we were better, so another
three points in the bag for the Super Reds.
I'm
not one for complaining about refs - they make enough publicity
for themselves, but let's just say that both sets of fans agreed
that they had seen better officiating!
We
can't help but speculate on who we might sign when the shackles
are finally released.
The
players signed on month-to-month terms over the summer - Illic,
Handyside, Gallimore and Ireland - all need to be retained.
Then
a striker and a left-sided midfielder look to be the key areas for
strengthening.
Carson,
currently on trial with us, looks a solid bet for the left-sided
slot, and the rumour is that Thorne from Cardiff might be on his
way.
He's
a proven goalscorer at this level, and might be just what we need.
It
was a shame to hear our rivals from S6 on the local phone-ins over
the weekend. They picked up three points, yet all they seemed to
be concerned about was telling everyone that Barnsley can't and
won't stay top.
Maybe
we won't, maybe we will, but after last season we are just enjoying
each game as it comes.
People
said the same all through the season when we got promoted to the
Premiership - yet we never came out of the top two all season!
Port
Vale away on Saturday, and their start to the season has taken everyone
by surprise. Their home form in particular has been excellent.
Of
course Gudjon - being formerly of Stoke, will know all about the
Vale team and I'm sure he will be extra keen to put one over on
them.
Given
the good form of both teams, I'm tipping a draw, 1-1, and hopefully
Lumsdon can mark his return from suspension with another goal.
It's
then Oldham at home next Tuesday, and I'm certainly expecting three
points from that one.
We
aren't full of goals, but I'm going for 2-0, and Gorre to return
to form back at Oakwell.
If
we pick up another four points over these next two games I'll be
delighted - though I don't think the Wednesday fans will be too
happy. Roll on December 13th!!!
COME
ON YOU REDS!!
