Picture Sheffield is a Lottery-funded project to catalogue and transfer
the city's photographic collections held in the Local Studies Library
into digital images.
So far 7,700
images have been scanned in and catalogued, all pre-1950, out of
a total of 60,000.
Everything from
buildings, events and pastimes to pictures of local people are in
the collection.
Special features
include images of World War Two blitz damage in December 1940 and
the Sheffield flood of 1864. The flood pictures are some of the
earliest photos of Sheffield.
Now the project
needs your help! Images that need identifying, where very little
or nothing at all is known, are being discovered all the time.
That's why BBC
South Yorkshire are putting dozens of these "unidentified"
pictures on display, in the hope that our users can identify them
and provide some missing pieces to the city's visual heritage.
