We
asked Christine Smith, wife of the Vicar, to tell us
about the ongoing restoration of St George's:
"The
reason that the church is so valuable is that it is all in
a piece - it's all Victorian - its not from different periods
- it's all of a certain decorated style, by George Gilbert
Scott, it's a wonderful decorated Gothic style.
There's a lot of soot around, after a hundred years of coal
fired boilers - much of it has ended up in the roof and the
stone work is damaged, because of past cleaning that didn't
work.
This
stone is quarried locally - it's limestone and porous and
they had tried some high pressure water that soaked into the
stone... it wasn't a good idea and it made things worse.
We don't get any public money - we have to go to heritage
charities and places like that, so we'll be launching an appeal
in October, we need funds to continue the second phase of
the restoration work.
It's a six million pound appeal - it's very daunting - given
that my husband is the only paid member of staff apart from
the verger and we've no secretaries, no administrators yet.
St George's is a lovely church that just needs caring for
and that costs money, unfortunately."

Scott's
design replaced a 12th Century Norman Style church that burnt down
on the last day of February 1853.
The church re-opened in 1858, featuring many fine nineteenth century
stained glass windows...
