The title of
this film is the name of an annual convention of transgendered people
in America. It could have been retitled "Small town girl grows up
in a different way". It is a powerful and moving documentary about
the life and death of Robert Eads, a female-to-male transgendered
person. Robert was married and was the mother of two boys, one of
whom still called him "Mom". Robert’s own mother preferred him to
be gay rather than a transgendered person, and his father told the
neighbours that Robert was his nephew when he visited.

He had a mastectomy
when he became Robert, but did not have phalloplasty surgery. He
believed that being a man was in the mind and the heart. Tragically,
ironically, he developed ovarian cancer, and eventually died from
it because doctors were unwilling to treat him.
Robert had the
love and support of his partner, Lola Cola, and other transgendered
couples, which sustained him, and his own inner strength helped
him live life to the full. Perhaps another title for this film could
have been this line from the Rocky Horror Picture Show - "Don’t
dream it, be it."
