Raw Talent Introducing

Raw Talent Introducing

BBC Radio Sheffield's Raw Talent went out of the studio and on to the road for one night only in December 2008 showcasing the best unsigned music that SY has to offer - at one of South Yorkshire’s top rock venues, Carling Academy. Listen to it here!

Listen to Raw Talent

:: On Radio Sheffield every Thursday night from 7-10pm - FM 88.6, 104.1 and 94.7

:: Listen again at any time via this website. Just follow the links on the right of the page...

:: The Raw Talent gig from the Carling Academy was played out on BBC Radio Sheffield on New Year's Day, if you missed it though, don't worry! Hear the action from the night, plus exclusive interviews with the bands on this page (links below.)

We teamed up with Higher Rhythm, the not-for-profit company based in Doncaster that provides access to the music industry.

Line-up

Raw Talent presenter Iain Hodgson was tasked with the job of choosing the line-up for the gig.

"We could have put on a festival with the amount of quality acts in our area (and you never know, one day we might!)," said Iain. "We tried to represent a mix of the great talent that's out there - and the final line-up on the night was..."

:: Rosie Electro

An amazing voice backed-up by the guitar of Jack Skellington. Their music fuses piano-led songs with an electro edge, and they'll bring some style to proceedings. They may be young but they bring an amazing talent to the table.

:: Playground Mafia

An explosion in a synth line from three Sheffield lads. Their mash up beats, heavy bass, a stomping rhythm and the bite of Matt Bruce's vocals have already rocked the Plug, Bungalows and Bears and the Harley (to name but three!). They'll lift the roof off the Academy and spin it round.

:: Skullbone

A Doncaster two-piece who make enough noise to make a statue wince! Just the drums of Mick D Lee and the guitar and vocals of Rob Che drive this post-punk country rock band forward, but in darn fine style.

True Gentlemen

True Gentlemen

:: True Gentlemen

They may have only been out in the public arena for just over a couple of months but they bring together the experience of indie band Up Carey Street and the energy and presence of Paddy Orange. They sound tighter than tight and will light the touch paper to get the party jumping!

:: Dead World Leaders

Their time is here. Since 2006 they've been bringing their sound to South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and further afield and have already garnered industry interest including playing In The City recently in Manchester. Their live show has packed out venues and their experience and dedication to their craft will bring power and punch to the bill.

:: Skeletons

What can we say about the Skeletons? How they're still unsigned is down to their high standards and unwillingness to settle for an easy buck. Formed from the ashes of This Girl, Skeletons brought on board a new member and after working up their sound, hit the live circuit around a year ago. Still with less gigs under their belt than there are days in a month, they bring a stunning live show - you'd almost think someone had electrified the stage! They headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Leeds/Reading, and the NME has hailed them 'the new kings of Sheffield.'
