Seth Bennett with Junior Witter

Seth with Junior Witter

Seth's Sports Blog #8

Armed only with a cameraphone and a sense of humour - in addition to his usual microphone and passion for sport - Seth Bennett reports from behind the scenes at the sports events he covers for BBC Radio Sheffield.

Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat!

I can't believe it, already we are into my favourite month of the year, I love December for two reasons, I am a big sucker for the whole Christmas thing, but also come December, it is the chance to watch loads of sport.

The week between Christmas and new year is brilliant, all we seem to do is get up go and interview the managers before games, then the next day go and see the games.  For sports junkies like me it is perfect, for my fiancée Claire it is a time when she sees me Christmas day and then again first week in January. With all of that in mind I think that I will go this weekend to get my Christmas tree, otherwise we will end up not having one.

Sports Awards

Last Sunday was the BBC Yorkshire sports awards a glittering night where we all get dressed up in penguin suits and celebrate the sporting achievements in the region over the previous 12 months.  It is a really good night because you get the chance to sit down and enjoy the company of some of the people you only ever see in professional circumstances when you interviewing.

James Toseland with Seth Bennett

Kiveton Park boys James and Seth

I was on a table with the Sheffield Tigers, Chesterfield and James Toseland.  We had a really good night discussing what is going the world and I learnt all about Spire-ites manager Lee Richardson's punk rock past, Tommy Lee eat your heart out, I now look forward to hearing Lee play the drums.

James Toseland won the big award the BBC Yorkshire Sports personality of the year, which was voted for by you lot.  He is not only a great bike rider, but an amazing example of someone who has always kept his feet on the ground and enjoyed a sense of where he is from.

Despite rubbing shoulders with some very rich and famous people, James remains a lad from Kiveton Park and he is never shy to tell people about it.  I am also very impressed with his constant signing of autographs.  I am not  sure there are many he turns down.  He is now through to the final ten of the big awards that are this Sunday in Birmingham.

It's up to you to vote again and although I expect him not to feature at the top of the tree, I would love to see him get more than an honourable mention.  2008 could be the year that James Toseland becomes a household name and face across the whole of the country.

The Hitter

Junior Witter picked up the best performance award for beating up Vivian Harris at the Dome.  Harris was so cocky and so dangerous, Junior showed the world what he is all about and I am glad he is getting the right kind of credit.  Too often he is hidden by the sizeable shadow of Ricky Hatton.

Funnily enough can't wait for Sunday morning I will pay my money and without doubt I will enjoy watching what should be one of the super fights of my lifetime.  I think Hatton v Floyd Mayweather could be a real classic, for me Ricky has to hurt him early and prove he is there and won't be put off by Mayweathers showy antics.  I think there will be a late stoppage in this one, but will be edge of your seat entertainment and in my mind if Hatton dictates the pace he will win.

Seth Bennett and Jessica Ennis

Super Jess

Jessica Ennis won the best senior female performance, as an athlete she is still developing, but as an interviewee she has really developed I spoke to her after the awards and she is a lot of fun to talk to.

Like James Toseland I get the impression that 2008 will be an important year for Jessica.  With the Olympics on the way I think if she medals then there is every chance she will be up the main award next time around.

Sheffield Steelers celebrate their win

Steelers

As I type this I am sitting in Ice Sheffield listening to Football Heaven and looking forward the Challenge Cup Semi Final.  I am really looking forward to watching the game.

I love ice hockey and there is nothing better than the big night for the Steelers with the chance of the Panthers in a major final.  I really hope come 10pm I will be enjoying a good win.
