Steve White

Steve White

Barnsley boy Steve White can be heard on Early Breakfast every weekday morning from 5-6.30am, and on his Northern Soul and Motown show every Wednesday from 7-10pm, repeated on Saturdays from 5-7pm and also available for seven days on the BBC iPlayer.

What's the first record you bought?

Well I can't PERSONALLY take the credit for "buying" it, but someone thought that the debut Black Lace album would make a great present for one so young! So I was Agadoo-ing it from a very early age!

Your favourite three songs?

Impossible task… tried writing three down, then changed them… then changed them… then changed them… then changed them…

Who’s been your best interviewee and why?

Russell Watson - without a doubt! I've interviewed quite a few big "stars" (hate using that phrase!) since I started in radio, the majority of which have been great to be fair. But Russell Watson was the most funny, down-to-earth "celeb" I've ever met.

Because I spent a number of years working the Working Mens Clubs/Pubs across the North, just like Russell, we spent about 20 minutes just comparing notes on Concert Secretaries, Committee Men, dressing rooms that double up as cleaner's store cupboards etc...

What’s been your worst on (or off)-air moment?

You want just the one?! Well I get quite a lot of stick for having colourful language (sometimes!) but I can honestly say I've never actually slipped up on air… Apart from… the one occasion I tried to say the term "Bank Holiday Weekend" - something happened and the B and the W managed to swap themselves around!!

What’s been your career highlight?

Getting paid for doing it! I could say something cheesy like "landing my first show", or "meeting someone famous" but to be honest, after working voluntarily in radio for about five years it made a very pleasant change to actually end up doing it for a living!

How do you spend your time away from the microphone?

This changes, depending on the time of day… when I wake at 4am, my plan is always to go to work, then walk the dog, go to the gym and basically do all the usual day-to-day jobs you have to do… but once I FINISH work I usually end up falling back on the sofa, remote control in hand and falling asleep with Loose Women (the TV show, may I add!)

Favourite place in South Yorkshire or North Derbyshire, and why?

Love it up in the Peak District. Used to work on the radio station that served the Peaks so we'd regularly be broadcasting whilst surrounded by greenery! Being a music/DVD geek, I'm usually at home in HMV or somewhere like that... and pubs across Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheffield and Donny (too many to list!)

Who would you like to be trapped in a lift with?

The man who repairs lifts...

"On one occasion I tried to say "Bank Holiday Weekend" - something happened and the B and the W managed to swap themselves around!"

Favourite food and drink?

Since moving to Elsecar just over a year ago, it's both good and bad at the same time… I now have, all within walking distance, an Indian, Chinese, Fish & Chip, Burger/Pizza shop and all topped off with an off-licence! So, as with the favourite music question, impossible task to narrow it down to just one!

What do you never miss on television and radio?

I love comedy! Have to say I probably favour the classic stuff as opposed to the modern, although I'm not against all of it. The Ricky Gervais and Peter Kay stuff has certainly made a massive impact, but I can't say I'm struck with the likes of Catherine Tate etc...

What would you do if you won the lottery?

Wonder how on earth it happened - every week I forget to buy a ticket!
