Blast

Laura Givans

Meet Laura

Laura's the Blast reporter for South Yorkshire for 2005, read more about her here...

Name: Laura Emma Givans

Age: 19 (and I refuse to be twenty! I am not growing up! I am not leaving teenagedom behind!!!)

Born and bred: Sheffield, South Yorkshire. I'm really really proud of our city, we're the fourth biggest in the country!

What I do

Laura Givans
Sheep or penguins? Laura prefers sheep!!

I've just finished my first year at Lancaster Uni studying English Literature, Creative Writing and Philosophy, and next year it will be straight English Lit all the way.

Interesting Fact

I've nearly finished my Gold Duke of Edinburgh award - we did our expedition in the Scottish Wilderness...ever been on a toilet with panoramic views?!

Loves

Gingerbread men (they're yummy!!) ,seeing my friends, reading, writing, playing jazz on sax and clarinet, hot chocolate, tennis

Hates

Flying ducks, rude/arrogant people, spiders, grey skies in the summer (hello?!)

Music

The Kaiser Chiefs
The Chiefs 'like to have a lot of fun'

I love jazz, and all the soul, blues and funk surrounding it. A wicked band I saw recently is The Fat Cats, look them up! I love most music for dancing to, including R 'n' B, hip hop and all the cheesy classics that make a night out, but my fave music is rock and indie.

The best bands at the moment are the Kaiser Chiefs, The Coral, The Magic Numbers, Razorlight, Athlete, Killers, Feeder, Coldplay and the unstoppable U2. I also love Maroon Five and Rooster...but I get teased?!

Ambitions

I've always always always wanted to be a writer and I want my first novel published one day! I also want to be a journalist and the Blast scheme should hopefully help get me started. Then when I'm rich and famous I want to open my own jazz club (one to rival my best friend hehe!).

Sheep or penguins?

SHEEP!! There is no contest.

Blast

I'm going to be out reporting on all the happening events over the summer from all over South Yorks, including bands, musicians, theatre, dance, art and writing, and all things wierd and wonderful, so if you know of any events or if you're in a band or anything yourself, let me know!

Laura you are a fantastic young journalist, and will go a hell of a long way. Having intimate knowledge of your work it only makes me further understand the time and effort you have given to blast.Well done and im really proud of you. Lots of love Axxxxxx

Sarah
Well done on all your work!! Its amazin! I'm proud of ya! xxx

Col
I must say, I'm impressed, old thing. You're dangerously close to making journalism seem respectable. Keep it up and you'll be the next John Humphrys. Just younger, and less Welsh.

Donna (fellow cartmo editor)
Wow you sound like you are having an amazing time and i'm so pleased for ya! (okay, yeah i'm slightly jealous hehe). But seriously though well done, just don't forget about our little baby, 'Cartmopolitan'. I can't wait to see you when we get back to Uni! Lancaster rocks! woohoo xxx

John
Take it from me, you'll never get rich being a journalist. Stick to writing the best sellers! Ed.

Matthew/Brother

Check out 'The Hillbillies' at The 'Upperthorpe pub' first Friday in every month. They are fantastic!hey play in the main rock n roll, but also early 70's stuff as well.A real treat if you have never been before & great value at only £2 entry fee. Regards Clare

John Anstie
Laura, if you enjoy jazz and funk in particular, go and see a rising Sheffield band, 'Ninio'. They appear regularly at The Grapes on Trippet Lane and, I suspect, will soon be appearing in other venues too.
