Woods shaded the early rounds and stepped to the plate in the fifth round landing a solid shot which unstabled his American opponent.
The 2000 strong crowd at Magna were behind Woods all the way and sensed victory in the fifth when Woods had his man on the ropes.
Hoye had been deducted two points in the earlier rounds, but Clinton stopped Hoye in the fifth round after subjecting the American to an onslaught after sensing he'd hurt his opponent.
Woods and manger Dennis Hobson were delighted with the performance and the result, particularly as Woods had dedicated the fight to his deceased trainer Richard Poxon.
"I feel absolutely fantastic," Woods said after the bout.
"I've sparred with the best and now I feel I am the best, everything went right in training and I'm the Champion now.
"I've achieved everything, I've won the British, Commonwealth and the European and now the World.
"I've come back, I've got myself right, and that's the real Clinton Woods."
