Who Do You Think You Are?

Over 3000 people visited Sheffield Winter Garden to find out more about tracing their family history as part of the BBC's series Who Do You Think You Are?

December 2004

Tracing your family history is a very popular pastime, partly fuelled by the success of the BBC Two programme Who Do You Think You Are?

In 2004, the BBC in Sheffield held a family history day at the Winter Garden for people interested in family history.

Over 3000 people attended the event at which local history groups from the whole of South Yorkshire were on hand to give advice to people wishing to trace their family history.

Local musicians performed in the Winter Garden, and staff from the Sheffield Archives gave presentations about a national archive website called Moving Here which provides information of people who migrated here from the Jewish, South Asia, Irish and Caribbean communities. Visit the website by clicking on the link on the right of the page.

People could jump on the BBC Radio Sheffield Bus to use the internet to start tracing their family history.

There's a wealth of information on about family history on the internet, including the 1901 census.

If you know a little about your family history and have an interesting story to tell, give us a call on the BBC Action Desk on 0114 267 5444.

:: For more information about how you can look deeper into your family history, visit the BBC Family History website by clicking on the link on the right of the page where you'll see guidance and tips on where to look and how to interpret the wealth of information available.
