AUTISM

Autism (including Asperger Syndrome) is a lifelong developmental disability. It is a spectrum disorder, occurring in varying degrees of severity.

It is no longer a rare condition and is thought to affect about 535,000 people in the UK today, with more than 1600 in Yorkshire.

Its effects can make the understanding of social communication and language difficult. Which can mean that building relationships and interacting with other people is very difficult.

Richard attempted suicide, before a social worker recognised his behaviour as displaying autism.

The correct diagnosis of his Asperger's Syndrome has meant, in Richard's words: "…I’m a lot more happier indeed, my problems are dealt with. In fact – I haven’t got problems now, my problems are solved."
