scouts in Southampton in 1912

Scouting History

Using archive film, we look at 100 years of scouting in the south of England, including a grand rally in 1912 - attended by Baden-Powell himself.

In Southampton, in 1912, the Hampshire scouts held a grand rally with displays of first-aid and a game of Cowboys and Indians.  Footage, shot on an early cine camera, shows that just five years after the formation of the scouts the movement was already booming.

Chief Scout, Lord Baden-Powell attended the rally and appears in the film with his fiance Olave, a few weeks before they were married.

Gyro-gliding at Lasham Airfield.

Half a century later, more filming took place at Lasham airfield.

"I was as excited as anything. I hadn't realised how different the world is from 1300 feet up!"

Geoff Martin

For 20 years, Lasham was the national air activities centre for the scouts.

Roger Finn has been looking at the history of scouting in the south and accompanied three ex-scouts, who remember flying at Lasham, back to the airfield where they reminisce about flying, gyro-gliding and sleeping in an old aeroplane.
