ReportersYou are in: South Today > Reporters > Steve Humphrey ![]() Steve Humphrey Steve HumphreySteve is one of South Today's most experienced reporters. His interests range from defence to sport - but he also covers breaking news stories wherever they are. I can claim to be the only one person on Earth who scored on his debut at Portsmouth's Fratton Park stadium - and made a cameo appearance with Victor Meldrew in the hit BBC comedy "One Foot in the Grave!" And to think it all started when I was persuaded to spend Saturday afternoons covering Sussex league football matches in return for five pence for every line published. It was either that or the continuation of a cracking career in egg collection at my uncle's farm. Since then I've managed to combine broadcasting with an ever-deteriorating standard of cricket and slightly more elegant forays onto the pistes of Europe. A sister handily placed near the French Alps has helped. I continue to play the occasional game of football - hoping to recreate the form that led to that debut goal at Fratton Park. Just in case you were wondering, it was a charity match back in 1989 to raise money for victims of the Hillsborough disaster.
