Jedburgh Deer and Farm Park

Set in the Borders hills, five miles south of  Jedburgh, the park has a wide range of animals to see from the herds of deer to sheep, poultry, pigs, goats and a wallaby. There is even a 'clapping corner' where the kids can get up close to the animals. Trails to suit all ages and abilities can be taken and there is a ranger on hand to offer advice on walks and the animals. A picnic and barbecue area is also on site alongside an interpretative barn with more information on the animals and park.

Dumfries Museum

Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura

Difficult to miss this museum if you are nearby, as it is centred around a windmill tower. The focus of the museum is on historical artefacts and local flora and fauna of the neighbourhood. A possible attraction for children is the Camera Obscura on the top of the old windmill. The tabletop screen shows, panoramic views of Dumfries and the surrounding countryside, as long as it is not raining!

Threave Castle, near Castle Douglas

Even getting to this castle is exciting. The castle is set on an island in the middle of the River Dee and is accessible only by boat. A small ferry transports visitors to the island. The forbidding tower dates from the 14th Century and was home to the one of the 'Black' Douglases - Archibald 'the Grim'.

Old Bridge House Museum

Old Bridge House Museum

Old Bridge House Museum, Dumfries

The old sandstone bridge and its attached house is one of those atmospheric structures, which have fortunately survived into the 21st Century. You can spend a gentle hour or so viewing the history of everyday life of Dumfries. See what kitchens were like in the 1850's and 1900's (dire), an early dentist's surgery (even worse!) and a Victorian nursery and bedroom.

Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre, Jedburgh

The centre is open April to October. One of the main draws is the play park, which is one of the biggest in Scotland. Walks and trails are dotted around the park. Also on offer from time to time are guided walks with a difference such as a 'soundwalk' through the grounds.  Indoor events involving arts and crafts are also a regular feature. A tearoom and gift shops are also on site.

Philiphaugh Salmon Viewing Centre, near Selkirk

May to June and September to November is the perfect time to see salmon leaping up the River Ettrick but the centre offers much to do all year round. A brass rubbing trail, walks, gardens are amongst the attractions. Peek into nest boxes, try to spot a red squirrel or and otter and admire one of the largest working waterwheels in Scotland. An audio tour of a walk round the centre is available.

What have we missed? Send us your top tips for a great day out:
