Howzat!!

The sports boys here at BBC Sussex & BBC Surrey certainly work very hard but last week they surpassed themselves. Our web commentary of Sussex versus the Australians attracted thousands of listeners from across the globe!

We go global!

Johnny Cantor from the sports team told The Buzz "On Day One we got over 26,000 "hits" on our online cricket commentary described by the BBC Sport web bosses as - by far the biggest audience we've had for an online cricket commentary so far this summer."

"The e-mails came in from Billingshurst to Bahrain via Belfast. As well as Adelaide and Melbourne!!! I think it just goes to show the invaluable service BBC local Radio can provide for our listeners at home, in the ground and across the globe"

Here are a selection of the emails we've received from around the world:

  • Not as far away as Australia, but a little more off-the-cricketing-beaten-track, as it were, I'm listening to you in Taiwan. Great work so far from Sussex, but don't beat the Aussies too badly - we could do with inducing a false sense of security! Enjoying the commentary - thanks! Simon

  • Many thanks for your coverage - this match and the next are very important to Australia's preparations and selection choices for the upcoming series. You have many listeners in Australia. Great to hear you over the web. Cheers Nathan (Perth / Australia)
Bahrain flag
  • I have been listening to the commentary since the match started as I am a huge Sussex fan. Who do you think has been the county season's best player? Thanks Vaibhav, Bahrain P.S. Thanks for reading my question out loud.

John Lees was one of our commentators - he told The Buzz ""I'm a fan of several of the Aussie players - Brett Lee, who always seems to have time for people, Michael Clarke, who couldn't play an ugly shot if he tried and Simon Katich, who I had a good chat with at Arundel on an earlier tour."

"My favourite moment of the game at Hove was when Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting dropped an absolute sitter at mid wicket, enabling Carl Hopkinson to go on to score a hundred"

Global Reaction…

The death of Michael Jackson has reverberated around the world and on BBC Sussex & BBC Surrey we've had a wide selection of reaction.

Danny Pike put in a call to MY104-FM in Los Angeles and spoke to their morning man "Valentine" who was asking what would happen to all the people who'd bought tickets to the Jackson gigs at the O2 and what the reaction was in the UK to the news which had broken overnight.

Valentine also reported that friends of his had witnessed Michael Jackson rehearsing at the Staples Centre in LA and reported everything going well and Michael seemingly on good form, making his sudden death even more puzzling.

Later, Danny was also invited to give the view from this side of the pond for other stations in the United States including KOST-FM's Mark & Kristin in Los Angeles plus Don & April of STAR-FM and Morris Knight on 98.1 Kiss-FM both in San Francisco.

Twisting by the pool!

With temperatures soaring over the last week - it's been a full time job for staff here at BBC Sussex & BBC Surrey just to stay cool!

The Breakfast Team at Guildford Lido

Well, Mark Carter decided the best way was to make a splash on his Surrey breakfast show! They broadcast the last hour from Guildford Lido, which opened early especially for them!

Mark, Emma and Gurinda enjoyed a dip, along with Fanny from Fanny's Farm Shop who provided the picnic!

Fabulous florals and fantastic fauna!

Excuse the alliteration, but it pretty much sums up this year's Hampton Court Flower Show, which is being held this week, at Henry VIII's favourite palace on the River Thames.

The Surrey based flower show started in 1990, although the Royal Horticultural Society involvement, which continues today, actually came in 1993.

Hampton Court gets the bee's vote!

This year's event celebrates the 500th anniversary of Henry coming to the throne of England, and many of the gardens, floral displays and events throughout the showground, reflect that.

However, another great British tradition has also influenced the first few days of the show..... yes, the weather! It may have got off to a somewhat soggy start, but that hasn't dampened the spirits of the thousands gardening enthusiasts who have already, or are planning, to visit.

This is more like it, somewhere to sit and watch someone else do all the hard work!

If you prefer not to take your chances with the elements, you can click here to see pictures of the event, so you can enjoy the horticulture show too!

And if you have already been and taken some shots, email us at surrey@bbc.co.uk with your pcitures and we'll share them with everyone, on the website.

Sounds of Surrey

Doesn't time fly? Why, it only seems like a handful of months have passed since we last trotted off to Guildford's Stoke Park to join in the fun at Guilfest.

But it's been a whole year, and this coming weekend sees a return of Surrey's largest family music festival.

Guilfest
Are you going? Send us your photos! surrey@bbc.co.uk

As usual we'll have our two trusty photographers Darrell and Mark out and about, taking snaps of happy festival revellers, so if you see us, come and say hi and have your picture taken for our annual Guilfest gallery.

And before you set off, tell us what you are looking foward to at this year's event, and is there anything you don't enjoy about the Guildford festival? Let us know here.

And finally....the man from Atlantis sets off

Remember a couple of weeks ago we told you about Andy Butler, the local man who is planning to swim the English Channel for the first time, to raise money for the Surrey Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus?

Well, Andy, whose brother Michael, who lived with the condition for many years, completed his 5th and final update online for us this week, after getting the go-ahead for his swim!

Andy Butler
Andy gets ready to go!

If everything goes well, Andy will be setting off from Dover at 1am tomorrow morning (Thursday), complete with illuminated swimming hat and shorts (!!) so his pilot boat can see him in the dark!

We wish him every success with his epic swim, and will let you know how he gets on, as soon as he arrives at the other side!

You can read more about Andy and his training, or visit his Just Giving web page by clicking here.
