How about this for Christmas? Take two mates, an old banger costing zilch and then drive 3700 miles to Dakar. That's what seven local men did for Christmas....

Fact 1- 'Giles and co found their car after an appeal on BBC Southern Counties Radio
Fact 2 - The car they found was a 17 year old diesel Vauxhall Cavalier

But we're not talking Paris-Dakar style rally here. Oh, no.

The three week rally didn't feature state of the art super saloons built lovingly by teams of expert mechanics and designed to show off the manufacturer's latest gizmoes and gadgets..

No, quite the opposite. The rules were clear - no car used could cost more than £100 and you couldn't spend more than £15 on getting the car ready for the rally.

Once the rally is underway, there was no more help from the organisers, who make it all pretty clear on their website. "Teams are ON THEIR OWN", they write.
