Bikini Atoll and Explosions in the Sky
@ The Free Butts Brighton
t

Bikini Atoll derive their name from the Pacific Island bombed to hell by the USA as part of a series of atom and hydrogen bomb tests.

Taking that idea of a beautiful idyll where dark deeds are taking place will give you a clue where Bikini Atoll are coming from musically.

Rock and Roll Heaven and Hell
Start quotes.A collision of Joy Division with the Fall in a fist-fight with the Gang of Four.End quotes

A collision of Joy Division with the Fall in a fist-fight with the Gang of Four, the band also have their moodier moments, as their home on Bella Union might suggest.

Angular debut album “Moratoria” is already being superceded by new material, some of which was showcased tonight to a sell-out audience who are going to be hearing a hell of a lot more from this talented quartet.

On a similarly destructive theme were tonight’s second act, Austin, Texas’ Explosions in the Sky, who gave up an awe inspiring set that moved me to my very core.

The word intense springs to mind. Their massive post rock Mogwai-esque sound, had the venue shaking in its boots.

A very genuine performance from a truly explosive band.

Bikini Atoll’s Moratorium and Explosions in the Sky’s The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place are out now on Bella Union.
