Raven's Ait

Caretakers Vs Council

A tiny island on the River Thames called Raven's Ait, hit the headlines recently, when a group of environmental protesters moved onto the land, with the hope of turning the disused space into an eco-community centre.

The group are keen to be seen as "caretakers" rather than squatters, saying they leave buildings in better condition than when they found them.

However, Kingston Borough Council, the current owner of the island, say it's "resolute in its determination to seek repossession of the Island" and "utilise the facility for the benefit of local taxpayers".

BBC Surrey took the ferry to Raven's Ait to meet the people at the centre of the debate.

We approached Kingston Borough Council and asked them to comment and they sent us the following statement:

"A small group of people are currently occupying Ravens Ait Island illegally.

They took up residence without permission and have subsequently been asked to leave peacefully, without creating a financial burden for Kingston’s taxpayers.

Ravens Ait is a public asset and the Council is determined to regain possession and utilise the facility for the benefit of local taxpayers. The Island was declared surplus by the Council prior to the end of the lease with Ravens Ait Ltd. The Council has received enquiries from companies interested in Ravens Ait but whilst it is being occupied are being prevented from marketing the facility.

On 19 March Kingston County Court awarded the Council an order for possession of the Island, refused the occupiers permission to appeal and awarded costs to the Council. The order requires the occupiers to leave the Island.

Council Officers and Police have visited the Island instructing the Occupiers to comply with the Court Order and the Occupiers have been informed that the Council will not discuss any proposal whilst they remain on the Island.

The Council is resolute in its determination to seek repossession of the Island.”

EVICTION

The group have been evicted from Raven's Ait by the Council and High Court Bailiffs. BBC Surrey's Clare Dutton talks to Richard Maggs about being evicted from the island.

Have Your Say

Should the group be allowed to stay on Raven's Ait? What do you think should happen to the island?

They ARE squatters not environmentalists! Over the 2 month period they've been there they've used the same amount of electricity as 45 homes. Guess who will be footing that bill, oh yes, us the taxpayer! Good riddance to bad rubbish!

in response to Sally's comment, which is I believe a sadly ill-informed opinion, fuelled by distrust of people living an alternative lifestyle... have you actually met any of the 'long term squatters' of whom you speak? and if not, why is it that you speak of them with such vehemence? the group involved (of which I am not a part) was peacefully occupying a space owned by the public, and working hard to make accesible it's faciities for public use... they have now been (forcibly) evicted and the property will undoubtedly remain vacant until the council sell it to a private developer, who will use the land for financial gain, giving nothing to the community at large, (unless they are prepared to pay for it) sadly, the fate of so many neglected properties throughout London. I suggest that you do some research before making such comments in future..Public land should be for public use surely? if it all gets sold off for a quick profit, there'll be nothing left for our children to enjoy... unless they can pay for the priveledge.. not a very community minded view eh? :O) anyway, all love to you Sally, I hope that someday you'll change your mind :O)

I agree they have been in power far to long and it seems to have gone to their heads.Evict the council now, power to the people.

Alex
The council should agree to the groups demand that the island be used as an eco community centre run by a coalition of local environmental groups, not sold to the highest bidder. The group have said they will then leave the island.

carla fox
leave them be they are doing great things

Ian
They should be evicted immediately. Their proposal is good, but their method is flawed. Assuming possession of the island and preventing other individuals or companies being able to propose the future use is not legal, moral or ethical. Our society will not benefit if this behaviour is tolerated.

Sally
No they should not be allowed to stay - they are long term squatters who will simply move onto another expensive, well equipped property - good riddence to them
