Polesden Lacey

Polesden Lacey

Polesden Lacey is a large Regency country house set in the downland countryside in Great Bookham, near Dorking.

There has been a house on this site since at least 1336 but in 1630, the new owner, Anthony Rous, completely rebuilt the medieval house.

Further owners altered and added to the building, and in 1906, the house was converted by Mewes and Davis, architects of the newly built Ritz Hotel in London.

The Honeymooners

At this point the house was owned by Mr and Mrs Greville, famous in Edwardian circles for their entertaining.

They were great friends of the Royal family, especially Edward VII, George V and Queen Mary. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother spent part of her  honeymoon at Polesden in 1923.

Mrs Greville gave the house to the National Trust in 1942 in memory of her father, and after she died the house was opened to the public.

There was a fire in 1960 which caused damage to the original decoration, which had to be replaced. In 1995, a restoration plan was started.
