Vegetable nativity scene

18th December 2008

BBC Southern Counties advent calendar for 2008, looks at Christmases past and present across Surrey and Sussex.

DECK THE HALLS WITH BOUGHS OF..... CAULI?

A cauliflower is not the first thing you would reach for when putting up your Christmas decorations.

Crib

And replacing the fairy on top of the tree, with a parsnip, could see you spending the festive season in your local hospital's more "secure" accommodation!

But the staff at Tulleys Farm in Crawley have other ideas.  Diane Simmonds and Sally Duguid from the West Sussex farm shop have created what they believe is a world’s first..... a nativity scene made entirely from fresh fruit and vegetables!

The Three Wise Men are in fact Wise turnips, onions and apples with lemon crowns. Mary and Joseph are made from butternut squash and the Little Baby Jesus is..... a carrot!

Animal

The sheep are made from cauliflowers and other animals made from potatoes, and other assorted vegetables.

There is a serious message behind the vegetable tableau. Stuart Beare from Tulleys says the nativity scene was created to encourage children to eat more vegetables.

Although eating Little Baby Jesus is probably not a very Christian thing to do....
