Reviews of Brighton Festival

Arthur Oppenheimer
Arthur Oppenheimer

John Myerscough and Alasdair Beatson

By Arthur Oppenheimer
Myerscough and Beatson filled the Pavilion Theatre with cello and piano - but did the pairing really work?

Arthur Facts

NAME: Arthur Oppenheimer

FESTIVAL LIKE: The range and variety of work

FESTIVAL DISLIKE: Lack of a theme to link items, poor advertising and no film festival

ALL TIME FAVE SHOW TO REVIEW: Medea

MY BEST KEPT SECRET: I have no secrets!

A great venue, – a great time – normally a wonderful mixture of middle aged audience and an enthusiastic energetic and well rehearsed classical or world music concert.

John Myerscough (Piano) and  Alasdair Beatson (cello) have won many international awards, their repertoire looked interesting and yet somehow for me it didn’t raise my spirit.

In fact at times the duo seemed to play against each other rather than in accord.  I know that sometimes this is role of a duo – to spark one instrument off against the other.

But for the first time in this festival this lunchtime concert did not meet my expectations.  Seeking another point of view I turned to a young visiting American sitting next to me doing an MA in the expressive arts and asked her what score she would give the performance.  ‘Six out of 10’ she said.  I concur.
