The cult of the celebrity is one of the hallmarks of our time. Actors are no longer simply movie stars but are followed relentlessly for their every word and move, while pop stars take to the international stage to shape global politics. Tamsin Shasha explores this cultural phenomenon in an enthralling one-woman aerial show that draws inspiration from the Euripidean Greek tragedy The Bacchae.

Using only a suspended rope and scrap of cloth to aid her, Shasha eloquently guides us through the story of a charismatic performer claiming to be the son of half-man, half-God Dionysus. As she winds about in mid-air she skilfully switches characters, telling the tale from the perspective of the protagonist, his adoring fans and the non-believing professor who will prove to be his downfall. Simple choreography complements the pared-down storytelling, ratcheting up the tension and the looming inevitability of will occur. The end result is a performance that keeps the audience entranced and that resonates long after the show has ended. |
