Detournement was one of the first ‘electroclash’ nights in Brighton, starting out at a tiny, sweaty venue which used to be called The Joint. Giving indie scenesters a taste of fresh new music such as Fischerspooner and Peaches was rather brave back in the day when fashionistas frowned at electronic dance music in general. So whilst setting the scene 5 or 6 years ago was done with great success, Detournement has certainly had its day. There were no exciting new tracks being played this week, but certainly some to reminisce about, which suited a closing night. The audience was very mixed: people had come to pay a tribute to a night that had meant something to them, and which was responsible for kicking off the Brighton electroclash scene. I’ve never seen the Komedia as busy; Detournement has unmistakably influenced many.

So keep an eye out for what will take Detournement’s place as the next Brighton trend-setting club night. My guess involves 8-bit computer game music, disco-hardcore, and even more 90’s pop. |
