Caught on camera: The crash of 1920

Littlehampton revealed

A lost Sussex can be seen in the collection of pictures at Littlehampton Museum - find out more.

Video Report: Forty Eight Hours

Littlehampton is a town that can remember its past pretty well - through the camera lenses of local people.

The town's museum has 10,000 images taken over a century - almost all of which have been donated by Littelampton people. Now the museum is producing a new book - 'Littlehampton Revisited' to show them off.

"The photographs are of Littlehampton one hundred years ago and it shows you how the town has actually changed over that period." said curator Rolf Zeegers.

Caught on camera: the aftermath

Interesting local characters and the building of major parts of the town are featured - and the new book will have a special chapter on local disasters.

"It's surprising how many disasters have occurred in Littlehampton over the last one hundred years." said Rolf.

One major accident is featured in graphic detail; a 1920s railway accident which occurred when the brakes on a locomotive failed as it was entering the station.

"It ended up crashing through the wall at the end of the station. Luckily nobody was killed. Only thirteen people were injured; sort of walking wounded. But what was interesting was the local photographer in the town, Mr White, happened to be at the train station so he caught all of the aftermath of what went on." said Rolf.
