Brighton's slavery links

If you join one of Brighton's Black History tours of the city, you can find out just how the history of the slave trade can be found throughout the seaside city.

Bert Williams, from Brighton Black History, has studied Brighton's connections to slavery.

He took BBC Southern Counties' Roots producer, Gwyneth Wint, around some of the areas of Brighton which have connections with the slave trade.

First stop, is St Nicholas Church.

This was the place where an African Princess got married.

Sarah Forbes Bonetta was given as a present to Queen Victoria when she was only 8.

She lived on Clifton Terrace in Brighton and married an African man called James.

Her wedding was a media event, the streets were crowded and people had to climb trees to get a view of the happy couple!

Next onto Victoria Road.

Home to four sisters whose grandfather was a slave!

His son was freed and made his fortune in London.

He married an English white woman.

Their four daughters lived in luxury and comfort in Brighton until their deaths…

Onto Royal Crescent on Brighton seafront.

The houses were built by a man who'd made his money out of a plantation in the West Indies - JB Otto.
