John Rhyder, woodcraft expert

Walk on the wild side?

Try this: Go wild in the woods

Could you survive in a forest? Does the Great Outdoors seem warmly inviting or weirdly frightening? John Rhyder aims to give you the skills that will help you to get a grip....

Video Report: Forty Eight Hours

For John Rhyder, a lifelong naturalist, woodsman and craftsman, there is nothing better than spending time with nature.

John believes that the fruits of the wood are there for us all to enjoy, if only we knew where to look.

John Rhyder, woodcraft survival expert

In the mood for camping?

He practices bushcraft  - the art of living safely in tune with nature - in fragments of the ancient wealden woods near Midhurst in West Sussex. Throughout the year he runs courses for complete novices to those looking for more specialist knowledge.

The range of skills required to live outdoors is as broad as the bow string John draws tight:

He fashions bows and axes, shows shows how to forage for wild foods and explores their uses. He points out how to track animals, explains what goes into setting up camp and generally what it’s like to live under the stars.

You can find out more about John and his courses by following the links in this page.

His passion has only one drawback. His partner Caron Buckingham has a problem with the issue of sticks.

“When John returns home he usually brings a stick back from his walks. Finn, my young son has started to do the same." she said.

"Everywhere I turn; there are sticks, just lots of them. It’s MY home after all”!! said Caron.
