Drag Kings - Hot Frollick

My weekend: The Drag Kings

They call themselves Hot Frollick – a ‘troupe of dancing drag princes who exist to bring more joy in to your life'. But how do they do the beards?

Video Report: Forty Eight Hours

They started off in autumn 2006 and have since been working on their outfits and perfecting their beards. In their own words, "Hot Frollick are a group of dancing drag princes who exist to bring more joy into your life!"

Drag kings are female bodied or identified performance artists who dress in masculine 'drag' as part of their routine. Several drag kings became British music hall stars in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Yet it has only been recently that drag kings have begun to gain some of the fame and attention that drag queens have known for years.

Hot Frollick are starting out with street-dancing as a boyband to other people's songs, which is the existing format for drag kings internationally.

The drag king scene is already established in places like San Francisco and Sydney, and Hot Frollick hope to attend the International Drag King Community Extravaganza in Vancouver in October 2007.

Hot Frollick member Lucy explains why she chooses to do drag:"What I like about drag is playing with gender. There is a vast gender spectrum that is there to be explored. Its about delving into my masculine side, which in turn can make me learn new things about my own femininity.'

"I would also like it to be clear that I dont actually want to become a man - that is not what drag is about for me personally. To me It's just a bit of fun, but if it goes in some way to raise awareness of FTM (female to male) trans issues then that can only be a good thing!"

In this video, the Hot Frollick gang visit the Dazed and Confused magazine headquarters for a glamorous photo shoot, while Hot Frollick founder Foxx (aka Rachel) gives us a step-by-step guide to drag for girls - from how to get the perfect beard to what exactly you should put down your pants!

This summer Hot Frollick plan to write and record their own songs. Look out for performances from them in the near future - check their myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/hotfrollick.
