Puppies

And they call it puppy love....

When Dogs Trust Shoreham Rehoming Centre received five "day old" Jack Russell Terrier puppies that had been rejected by their mother the only way the centre could care for them was by hand rearing them.

Being a Dogs Trust Canine Carer

A Dogs Trust Canine Carer's role in the Rehoming Centre is to work with the dogs in care, which includes feeding and walking dogs, kennel hygiene, working with the vet, and meeting and greeting members of the public.

Dogs Trust Canine Carer, Elaine Potter agreed to be the puppies surrogate mum as she had previously hand reared puppies.

Hand rearing puppies is just as demanding as caring for a new born baby as they need constant care and attention, as well as bottle feeding every couple of hours throughout the day and night.

So began a very busy period for Elaine, who also has three dogs of her own!  For the first few weeks, she bottle fed all five puppies every couple of hours, then at three weeks old the puppies were introduced to porridge, while continuing to be bottle fed.

Once the puppies had accepted the porridge into their diets, they were encouraged to eat dog food.

The puppies are now nine weeks old and are growing fast.  They are now only eating dog food and the puppies are getting stronger and more active by the day.

Elaine said "We are thrilled how well the puppies doing, they are growing rapidly and all integrate really well together.

While the initial period of hand rearing the puppies was extremely demanding, being able to save these puppies lives and watching them grow and develop is extremely rewarding.”

The centre has been able to find homes for all the puppies, but does stress that there are many other dogs at the centre in need of a home.
