A ghostly face at night

What's that noise?

Try this: A Bump in the Night

Have you ever seen or heard a ghost? Or do you simply deny their existence? We took our cameras to a ghost watch at a historic Sussex building - and we captured some surprising film....

Video Report: Forty Eight Hours

Have you ever seen a ghost? Or do you think ghosts and all that stuff are just a bit of spooky nonsense? Or have you not really made up your mind up about the paranormal?

After all, almost everyone has a ghost story. We’ve all sat around late at night and told a few spooky tales to chill the soul.

""I heard it very clearly. It was definitely the sound of a baby crying. It was very spooky because it sounded so clear and real.It was unmistakeable.""

Jav Douglas

Some people claim to have heard ghosts. A few claim to have seen them. But one thing we can be sure of - the prospect of them can raise a few quid for charity.

We went along with ghost watchers SPIRIT Sussex to a sponsored ghost watch for the blind charity 4sightsussex.

It was held at Michelham Priory on a dark January night. The Priory has a strong reputation amongst those who make up the paranormal community. They claim that a lady in grey has 'often been seen' near the gatehouse.

Some have reported poltergeist activity and there are also claims that a female ghost in Tudor clothing and a mystery man in a black cloak have been seen.

A moon on a February night

So what did we record that night?

When we went along our cameraman took SPIRIT member David Warner off on a tour of the house. He asked David to take him into a priesthole - a old hiding place - that lies within the walls.

The two men had been in the hole for a few moments when they heard, quite clearly, a baby crying.

"I heard it very clearly. It was definitely the sound of a baby crying. It was very spooky because it sounded so clear and real. It was unmistakeable." said our cameraman, Jav Douglas.

There is of course, one clear explanation for this. It is, obviously, that there was an actual baby in the building at the time and that somehow that distinctive sound had found its way into the priesthole.

But David Warner checked with the people who live in Michelham at the time and they said that there was no baby, or a child, in the old Priory that night.

Watch the video - then tell us what you think. Is there a perfectly rational explanation for what you can hear on this video?

Our second video of the Ghost Watch also records some footsteps on nearby stairs, but the organisers could find no evidence that there had been anyone on the stairs from which the noise came.

One 2003 survey suggested that, in fact ghosts are just the mind's way of interpreting how the body reacts to certain surroundings.

Psychologists took  hundreds of volunteers around two of the UK's supposedly most haunted locations - Hampton Court Palace, England, and the South Bridge Vaults in Edinburgh, Scotland.

They found that a chill in the air, low-light conditions and even magnetic fields may trigger feelings that "a presence" is in a room - but that is all they are, feelings.
