The Knitted Garden logo

The Back Yarn..d

Way back in Spring this year, Christine Kingdom of the British Hand Knitting Confederation and Dorking resident Jane Bolsover were trying to think up a community knitting project, which they could exhibit throughout the country.

So while most people would probably plump for a nice multi-coloured blanket made from squares lovingly fashioned by the fast fingers of the WI.

Or cutesy teddies crocheted by the local sewing bee, the designer Jane and the sponsor Christine, set their sights a little lower! At ground level to be precise.

Imagine a world where the grass is green,  the sky is blue and the birds are....well, made out of wool! Yes, that's right, a three dimensional four-ply world, where nothing is quite what it seems.

Welcome to the Knitted Garden.

Once the project theme was decided, the hunt was on for nutty knitters who would help make everything you would find in the garden from a deck chair and a vegetable plot, to a goldfish pond with frogs and a picnic laid out on a rug.

And unsurprisingly, there was no shortage of wool fiends out there, with their knitting needles poised in readiness!

Over 300 contributors took part and even now more pieces are being added, at the discretion of Jane.

Local talented needle clickers who helped by weaving their woolly magic, included the Crafty Knitters, a group of gay men knitting in Brighton, and 12-year-old Oliver from Sussex, who spent six months making the pond and waterfall!

Designer Jane estimates the team made 4 million individual stitches, knitting together 80km or 50 miles of wool!
